DITR Ride to Cobb Island, Maryland

April 19, 2009 • by Claire

Only two of us were able to make the ride today....R2 and C2. The ride got off to a rough start. R2 agreed to meet meet C2 at the Wawa on Rt. 1 in Stafford. I had told her that it was south of Courthouse Road. Well, once I took Courthouse Rd. to Rt. 1 and headed south, I realized I had given her to wrong directions, because the Wawa is actually NORTH of Courthouse Rd. So I turned around and headed north on Rt. 1. When I arrived at the Wawa, R2 wasn't there and I didn't have her cell phone number with me. Luckily, I had a friend back at the house....so I called her and asked her to give me the number off my caller ID. I called R2 and left her a message. I waited at the Wawa for a few minutes, and R2 called me back. She was about 8 miles south of me on Rt. 1 So I headed down Rt. 1 and found R2 parked on the shoulder.

So, about 45 minutes later than planned....we were finally on our way. R2 led the way down Rt. 1 to Fredericksburg. We took Rt. 218 which took us to 301. AS we approached the river, the temperatures dropped significantly. Driving over the Nice Bridge is fun on a bike! The view is beautiful from the top of the bridge. After crossing into MD, we turned off onto the road to Cobb Island. The scenery was beautiful....lots of farms, with horses and cows. The leaves are starting to pop on the trees and the dogwoods are in bloom and the azaleas are starting to bloom. The colors were amazing!

Welcome to Cobb Island

Once we arrived at the island, there really wasn't much there! It's a very small island with lots of beach houses. The 2 main restaurants (Captain John's and Shemansky's) were both on the mainland. We drove across a small bridge to get to the island. R2 and I explored the island, which didn't take very long! We saw a few osprey sitting in their nests and we saw lots of kids playing. There are some beautiful homes on the water!!

We crossed back over the bridge and headed to Captain Johns for lunch. R2 had osters and soup, and I had a salad and cream of crab soup. It was delicious! After lunch I took some pictures and we saw a very unique vehicle, that looked like cross between a car and motorcycle. It had 3 wheels and a single seat, with a steering wheel. It was a Stallion, by Thoroughbread. See the pictures.

AFter the photos, we got back on the bikes and headed for home. The ride home was uneventful. Once we got to Rt. 1, I turned off on 610 and R2 headed up Rt. 1 for home.

Capt. John's

I wish others could have joined us. It was a nice day for riding and this was a beautiful ride. the food was outstanding!
