This is our annual ride to Westmoreland Berry Farm, to get some fresh Asparagus, Strawberries, Peas and anything else we can find. In the past if the weather wasn’t good for 2 wheels, we would cancel the ride. This never made much sense to me because the idea was to get fresh produce. This year, I changed things and told the club if the weather isn’t good for 2 wheels, then we would go my car.
On Friday when I checked the weather it was calling for 40% chance of Thunder Storms and 60% chance of rain, so I canceled the bikes and we were going by car. A few people had to work, so those that were able to go were Rosie, Joni, and myself. We met at CVS off of Hoadly road at 10:45 and engines started at 11:00. Since it was just us 3, we all went in my car. I have a nice big trunk to hold all those goodies in.
We arrived a little after 12 and looked around some. Of course I had to feed the bigger goats. I found a really nasty goat. He didn’t want you to touch him. He would horn you, and he got me good - right in the middle of my arm! I looked at him and said, "well, no more corn for you." The rest if his corn went into the cup for the goat on the big platform!!!
We went into the store and I got asparagus, apple pie, strawberry butter and a hanging basket of flowers. Joni and Rosie picked out their goodies as well. Then it was time to grab lunch. We found a real nice table overlooking the view, and we talked and looked over the view, it was so nice and relaxing.
After lunch I told the girls I wanted to go down and feed the baby goats, so off we go. Just as we got to the area, the male goat sucked in his gut and squeezed thru this small opening in the fence and got out. He looked like he wanted to leave the area, so I tried to keep him there, everybody else ran out of the area. There was another smaller goat trying to squeeze himself thru the same opening and I wouldn’t let him, so I got some food to feed both of them. One of the guys went up to tell the people in the store about the goat that was loose, and they came down and got the goats back were they belonged. They are sweet goats - not at all like the nasty one I encountered. I’m sure people made him that way!!!!
Joni went over and got some really good pictures of the goats and the store, which I’m sure Rosie will post on the website!!!
It was time to head backup up the road. I had missed my first turn off towards CVS, and ended up getting off at the Dale City exit. On our way up Dale Boulevard, we started to talk about R-2 since she lives off of Dale Boulevard. Out of the blue, we thoughtit would be good to stop and say hello if they were home. Yes they were home; we could tell R-2 was surprised and happy to see us.
We hooked up and gave her an update of our lives, and then it was time to go. I know that R2 loves fresh asparagus, so I offered to give her some of what I got, and Joni gave some of hers as well. You should have seen the look on R2s face, she was happy!!!
I dropped everyone off at CVS and everybody started to head home. as I was pulling out of CVS, my cell phone rings, and it’s Rosie. She said to me, "aren’t we forgetting something?" I thought for a moment and said not that I’m aware of!!! She said "aren’t we to do some shopping for FoodStock!!!" I said; "oh my goodness, yes we are, I totally forgot about it." So she and I met at Shoppers and got over $70.00 of canned goods, which is a lot. I think we did great, and some families will be able to get some really good food!!!
Since Rosie has to put this into her sidecar, I helped her put all the bags in the trunk of her car. It was a good day, we had a lot of fun, and of course there was laughter involved!!
Ladies - thank you for another successful DITR event!!! Let’s keep riding into the future!!!
