Why I ride

By ET

ET on the Blue Ridge Parkway

How did you get into riding?

When I was in the military and stationed at Fort Hood Texas, I was living in my motor home, it became too costly for me to drive my motor home to and from work. I couldn't afford a car, with the motor home, so I bought a Honda 450, to only ride to and from work... After a week, it was in my blood, and I rode all over Texas, Arkansas, and the Ozark mountains. Then I was transferred to Washington DC; I rode to the pentagon daily, that was before HOV lanes, and drivers in the DC area back then, were NOT motorcycle friendly; we think they are bad today, they were a lot worse back then, we have come a long way to getting the word out about motorcycles. I couldn't tell you, how many times I was ran off the road, by someone cutting me out of my lane. Because of that, I didn't want to end up as rode kill. So I gave up riding, not with a lot of heart ache, every time I saw a bike, I would long to be riding... Until 2004; I decided, enough is enough, it was time to get back in the saddle, and I got the bike of my dreams a Vulcan 1500 classic... Love this bike; I WILL NEVER GIVE UP RIDING AGAIN!!!!!

Why do you ride?

I love the feeling of freedom my motorcycle gives me, to feel the wind against my body and seeing everything around me in the raw. It's when I feel the closest to GOD. There is no high better then a motorcycle...

What is your greatest motorcycle moment or fond memory?

1st; Riding in the Ozark mountains, was a thrill, of course this was back in the late 70s. Not sure which was better, the beautiful scenery or the country guys, that couldn't believe their eyes, when they saw a young woman riding her own motorcycle!!! I would give them a big smile a wink, and off I go; I would look in my rearview seeing them standing there with their mouths open. Even today those memories make me laugh... 2nd; Riding the entire length of the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway, with my friend Rosie, this was a trip of a life time for me. Rosie had tried this twice before and was pulled off the parkway due to heavy fog. Until this trip, we were blessed with GREAT WEATHER the entire trip. Out of everything we saw during this trip, the most memorable to me, is the friendship, laughter, and sharing the love of riding with a friend.

What else do you do; Work, Hobbies, Deep dark secrets?

I work with computers... My Hobbies; Of course motorcycles, bowling, horse back riding, hiking, and reading. Deep secrets, well there are a few, but none to be shared.

Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I hope one day, with my love of motorcycles, a young girl will say, I knew this woman who rode a motorcycle, and because of her, I ride... Can't ask for a better legacy, to leave something that you love to our future...
